Jane Eyre

I know it's weird to revive a thread a year and a half later...but now that I've posted about Jane Eyre (well, sort of), I'm really curious to know what about it made you "angry". I realize that as a male reader 150 years ahead of Brontë I'm clearly going to miss things, but to me, a gender-swapped sci-fi story would have still worked. Yes, this works better because such inequality really did/does exist, but compared to many other books it does not rely on some "fundamental difference between men and women", which I think is really great and was possibly still radical at the time (Jane is not defined only as "a lover of men"). But maybe I'm missing an important perspective here.
