He seems that way in the whole 30 pages I've read so far (I'm a slacker, I know!). The numerous Catherines are at the moment confusing. It would be a lot easier if the beginning came with a map of who's related to who & in what ways...I just need to force myself through the confusion and make it work out, as I'm sure it will.
