The earliest recurring dream I remember is from when I was pretty young -- maybe starting as early as first grade. In it, I followed a cat through a city that looked like it belonged in Spain or on the Mediterranean somewhere, all whitewashed stonework and mosaics and warm red tiles. Anyway, I followed the cat into a house, because the door was left open, and up some flights of stairs onto a balcony, where I arrived just in time to see the cat jump off the edge. Turning around, I was faced by an angry old lady, who yelled, "What did you do to my cat?!" before shoving me off the balcony. I fell until I woke up.

I also had another recurring dream in which my elementary school had been turned into a military base for some kind of illegal operation, and it was up to me and some of my childhood friends to infiltrate the base and take it out.

Rebecca knows that I have far too many interesting and generally vivid dreams...although hers are pretty good too (and may be resonsible for infecting mine with great quantities of Buffy).

In other news, I have been doing nothing. Almost literally. I've been reading a lot, but I'm realizing that what I'm reading is either a) intended for people much younger than I am (actually or just maturity-wise), b) some form of trashy romance, c) fanfiction, or d) a combination of all of the above. There's a list of books on my door that I should really be reading -- books by authors like Dostoevsky and Bronte (all three of them) and Austen and Chabon and LeGuin and Shelley -- and instead I'm reading paperback romances.

Oh well. It could be worse -- I could be reading literary fiction. *shudders*

:)

This entry made me laugh out loud so many times -- first when you were shoved off the balcony (akjakhf;a;fg WHY AM I LAUGHING AT THIS?) and then again with the "oh heavens no, not literary fiction" comment. lulz. :'D Chabon and LeGuin are both excellent contemp genre-ish authors, I find I like them because they tell ripping good yarns but their books also remain "literary" in the sense that the quality of the writing is above average too. although, trashy romantic paperbacks for real? I used to read those when I was like 15, and while they do hold a certain titillation factor the writing for paperback romances and most mass market paperbacks at large is unbearably bad 9 times out of 10.

Yeah, I know Chabon and LeGuin aren't entirely lit fic...though my dad wants me to read Chabon's more literary stuff...which I have discovered is so far meh. I'm gonna have to read Yiddish Policeman's Union sometime.

...and yes, paperback romance. Not the really really cheap ones. I'd say there's a long story, but it boils down to Rebecca and I thought it would be funny to read a few romance novels over the summer, sending them back and forth between us and making comments in the margins as we went along.

Hey! Haha. Literary fiction is not worse than trashy romance novels... Jerk.

On a related note, would you consider Jeanette Winterson literary fiction? Just wondering because I wasn't sure what to classify her as (p.s. read The Powerbook! When you have time I mean. And I swear I'll read Diane Duane as well).

On an unrelated note, I got your postcard :) And duh, it had frogs because now I have something to match Hilda.

AHAHA I had the same sort of elementary school base dream...that kind of dream is awesome. Pity I don't dream much anymore...or if I do, it's the bug sort of dream where you wake up feeling like something's crawling on you.

And eh, I've been reading all sorts of books this summer. Just went from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to Dragon's Fire (yet another Pern book). Still mean to go get the Tale of Genji from the library, though.

I can read the Brontes, Bukowski, Keats, Rand, and all those others from the English cannon for days...

... but I'll still be the most comfortable with Bloomabilty , a child's book by Sharon Creech.... I think?

Oh goodness, I read that book and loved it. I think you're right about the author.

Now I have a sudden need to find all of the books from my childhood. The problem with having limited bookshelf space is that books that I grow out of have a way of getting boxed up in the garage somewhere.
