I have the need RIGHT NOW to read something completely and utterly inspiring--something that will make me feel so much more myself, so much more real and so much more a part of a real world. I need a book that will wake me up, that will be the axe to the frozen sea within me, as Kafka would say: a book that will affect me like a disaster.

Book, if you are somehow reading this, please find me. I need you right now. I know that I will fall into an uneasy sleep without you.

How much Kafka have you read? That's always fun. I've really been liking "The Couriers" lately, but it's only one paragraph... "In The Penal Colony" will take you a bit longer. Or try "The Wall" (short story-- look in collections of fiction if you like, but you'll find it for sure in "Existentialism from Dostoevsky to Sartre," which just came back into print last year) by Sartre. If you can find it (which you probably won't), I highly recommend "Metaphase Typewriter" by Ken Babbs. I might send you a copy of the last one, since I really think you can't get it anywhere without paying through the nose (that is, you don't want to be buying six books as a package for the one story).

My knowledge of Kafka is confined to his one quote regarding how good books should affect us, "like the death of one we have loved more than ourselves," (or something like that) because it was one of the sayings on the wall at EPGY and I took it home with me. Oh, and I read Metamorphasis (also while at Terra).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not sure if there IS a book for how I was feeling last night, and all the other introspective nights of my existence. Maybe I'll have to write it.
